Queen's university
Founded in 1841, Queen’s University is one of Canada’s oldest and most respected
education institutions. In 2017, Queen’s was ranked 10th in Canada and 224th in
the world by QS World University Rankings. Currently, the university’s enrollment
is at 22,835 students, and is consistently increasing year over year. Queen’s is
divided into 10 schools. Approximately 85% of the total 2016 Undergraduate
enrollment was in the Arts and Science, Engineering and Commerce fi elds of
study. While the Medical Doctoral and Law streams have met tremendous national

Steady growth of student population
Academics
The city of Kingston is one of the country’s leading academic cities. In fact, the
city has the most PhD graduates per capita in the country, a representation of the
education-dominant character of the city. Education institutions include: Queen’s
University, the Royal Military College of Canada and St. Lawrence College
Campus
The university campus is roughly 99 acres and is located in the Queen’s
neighbourhood in Kingston. The surrounding areas include various student
housing properties and parks, with Lake Ontario just south of the campus. Queen’s
has 2 campuses: Main Campus and West Campus. Over time, the university has
acquired properties in the area for expansion purposes.
Student Enrollment
Enrollment at the university has steadily increased every year. Actual
enrollment fi gures have typically exceeded projections. Queen’s expects Fall
2019 enrollment to be roughly 25,000. The University projected that the Canadian university-aged population is
to drop slightly between 2011 and 2020. In order to circumvent enrollment
declines, Queen’s began to focus on alternative enrollment avenues, such as
part-time and mature students. The University considers it an institutional
priority to increase the number of international students.
In 2018/2019, enrollment of fi rst year international students increased by 7.9% from the previous year. The undergraduate-level student retention in 2017 for Year One to Two was 94.7%, among the highest in Canada. With Kingston’s historical economic structure, particularly pertaining to education services and research, and its senior population, doctoral-stream and PhD, enrollment is projected to increase
